Chimney work and leadwork

Most chimney leaks come from failed leadwork or flaunching, not the brickwork. We renew code 4 and code 5 lead flashings, soakers, back gutters and valley linings, rebuild flaunching and repoint stacks, all dressed and fixed to Lead Sheet Association guidance.

Signs to look for

How do you know you need it?

Damp on the chimney breast

Typically failed flashing, a perished back gutter or cracked flaunching letting water down the flue.

Lifted or split lead

Lead that has crept, split or pulled out of its chase joint is no longer keeping water out.

Crumbling mortar or cracked flaunching

The mortar collar holding the pots cracks with frost and lets water straight into the stack.

Our approach

How do we do it?

  1. 01

    Correct code and size

Code 4 for flashings and soakers, code 5 for gutters and valleys, in lengths that allow for expansion.

  2. 02

    Chased and wedged

Flashings set into raked-out joints, wedged and pointed, not stuck to the face.

  3. 03

    Patinated

New lead treated with patination oil to stop white staining running down the roof.

  4. 04

    Pots and flaunching

Pots re-bedded and flaunching rebuilt with a proper weathered fall.

Questions

Common questions

What is the difference between code 4 and code 5 lead?

The code is the thickness. Code 4 is standard for flashings and soakers. Code 5 is thicker and used for gutters, valleys and areas that take more water and foot traffic.

Can my chimney be repaired rather than taken down?

Usually. Most stacks need repointing, new flaunching and new leadwork rather than rebuilding.

Do you remove redundant chimneys?

We can reduce or remove a redundant stack and make good the roof, subject to structural and planning checks.
