Flat roofing

We install and repair flat roofs in EPDM rubber single-ply, torch-on built-up felt (BUR) and GRP fibreglass. The right system depends on the roof’s size, shape, foot traffic and what sits on it, and we will tell you why we recommend one over another.

Signs to look for

How do you know you need it?

Ponding water

Standing water a day after rain means the falls are wrong. It shortens the life of any membrane.

Blistering or cracked felt

Old felt blisters and splits with age and sun. Water gets in at the splits and the edges.

Damp on the ceiling below

Flat roof leaks often show some distance from the actual hole, because water travels across the deck.

Our approach

How do we do it?

  1. 01

    Check the deck

We look at the decking, falls and insulation, not just the top layer.

  2. 02

    Choose the system

EPDM for clean, simple roofs. Torch-on for durability and foot traffic. GRP for complex shapes and walkable finishes.

  3. 03

    Detail the edges

Most flat roof failures are at upstands, trims and outlets. We spend the time there.

  4. 04

    Photograph the finish

You get photos of the finished roof you can’t see from the house.

Questions

Common questions

Which is best: EPDM, felt or GRP?

None is best everywhere. EPDM is a single seamless sheet that suits simple shapes. Torch-on BUR is tough and repairable. GRP suits awkward shapes and areas you walk on. We recommend per roof.

Can you repair a flat roof rather than replace it?

Often, if the deck is dry and sound and the failure is local. If water has saturated the deck, a new roof is the only lasting fix.

Do you do flat roofs on dormers?

Yes, including the leadwork and cheeks where the dormer meets the main roof.
