Why Hawkes

Evidence first. Then the work.

Plenty of homeowners are told they need a new roof when what they need is a repair done by someone who found the real cause. We go up, photograph everything and explain it in plain English.

You see what we see. The work is agreed in writing before it starts, and the phone is answered by the person who will be on your roof. 6+ years on the tools, and no sales team.

  • Slate & tile repairs: Slipped, cracked or missing slates replaced and fixed properly. On older slate it’s usually the nails that fail, not the slate: nail sickness. Slate and tile repairs
  • Ridge, hip & verge: The ridge caps the top of the roof and the verge seals the gable edge. Both take the brunt of the wind, so we re-bed or mechanically fix them to current standards. Ridge, hip and verge work
  • Chimney & leadwork: Lead flashings, soakers and back gutters seal where the stack meets the roof. Most chimney leaks start in the leadwork, not the brick. Chimney work and leadwork
  • Leak repairs: Bay roofs, porches and anywhere a roof meets a wall are classic leak points. We trace the water back to where it actually gets in, then fix that. Roof leak repairs
  • Flat roofing: Extensions, garages and dormers in EPDM rubber or felt. Laid to a proper fall so water runs off instead of sitting on the roof. Flat roofing
  • Fascias, soffits & guttering: The boards along the roof edge and the gutters fixed to them. Rotten timber and sagging gutters let water into the walls and roof edge. Fascias, soffits and guttering
  • Roof cleaning: Moss removed by hand, then a low-pressure soft wash and biocide that keeps working. Never pressure washed. Roof cleaning and moss removal
  • Gutter cleaning: Gutters and downpipes cleared by hand, flow-tested and photographed. A blocked gutter quietly rots the roof edge. Gutter cleaning
  • New roofs & re-roofing: When the photos show the fixings or felt have failed across the whole roof, a re-roof is the honest answer, often reusing your original slate. New roofs and re-roofing

Roof repairs · Hertfordshire & Bucks

Slipped or missing slates? Find the cause before you pay for a new roof.

A slipped slate is usually a repair, not a new roof. On older Welsh slate roofs the slate often outlasts the iron nails holding it, known as nail sickness. We find out which it is and photograph it for you.

Roof maintenance

Cleaned by a roofer. Never pressure washed.

Drag the line on each photo to see the difference. Every visit includes photos of anything that needs attention.

Why don’t we pressure wash roofs?

It strips the surface off concrete tiles, so they hold more water and moss comes back faster. On slate it drives water up under the laps, straight into the roof. We remove moss by hand, soft wash at low pressure and apply a biocide that keeps working after we leave.

Areas we cover

Local roofs, known properly.

Every town has different roofs. Our area pages cover local housing, conservation areas and what typically fails there.

Questions

Straight answers

Is the roof survey really free?

Yes. We inspect and photograph your roof and give you a report that is yours to keep, whether you hire us or not.

Do I need a new roof?

Usually not. Most roofs need a repair by someone who has found the actual cause. We only recommend a re-roof when the photos show the fixings, battens or felt have failed across the roof.

Do you pressure wash roofs?

No. Pressure washing strips the surface off concrete tiles and drives water under slate laps. We remove moss by hand and soft wash with a biocide.

Who will I speak to?

The roofer. The phone is answered 8am–6pm, Monday to Saturday, by the person who will be on your roof.

Which areas do you cover?

Towns across south-west Hertfordshire, south Buckinghamshire and north-west London, including St Albans, Harpenden, Rickmansworth, Amersham and Beaconsfield. See the areas page for the full list.
