Roofing questions
Will a slipped roof tile cause a leak?
A slipped tile or slate can leave a gap in the roof’s weather protection. It does not prove that the whole roof needs replacing, but it should be checked rather than ignored—even if there is no visible leak indoors.

One slipped tile is not a whole-roof diagnosis
The covering, its overlaps and the underlay work together to manage rain. Whether water reaches the house depends on the gap, exposure and the condition of the layers beneath. An absence of indoor staining is not proof that everything underneath is dry.
A roofer checks the displaced covering and surrounding area. An isolated defect with sound supports can often be repaired locally; wider deterioration changes the scope.
Why do natural slates keep slipping?
Nail sickness describes corrosion of the nails that hold natural slates. The slate can remain usable while its fixings deteriorate. Repeated slipping on the same slope may point to this, but damaged slate or supporting timber can also be involved.
One slipped slate alone does not establish widespread nail sickness. The useful evidence is the condition of fixings, neighbouring slates and the support beneath them. Conservation guidance notes that fixings and timber can fail before the slate itself.
What is a slate tingle repair?
A tingle is a fixing used in an individual slate repair. The replacement or refixed slate needs to match the roof and be secured appropriately. The method must suit the covering and what is supporting it.
A local fixing cannot renew deteriorated fixings across an entire slope. If repeated repairs are no longer addressing the underlying condition, a photographed assessment should explain why a larger repair or re-roof may be justified.
What to send before a survey
Tell us whether this is the first displaced tile or a recurring problem, whether it followed strong wind, and whether there is any indoor damp. A photo taken safely from the ground helps identify the roof covering.
Keep people away from the area below loose material. Do not climb up to push a tile back or pull on a loose slate.
Related questions
Can you replace just one tile or slate?
Often, yes, when the surrounding roof and supporting material are sound. Matching the profile, size and material matters as well as securing the replacement.
Does nail sickness mean the slates are worn out?
Not necessarily. The original fixings may fail before the natural slate. Sound slates can sometimes be reused during a re-roof, subject to inspection.
