Roofing questions

Does moss on a roof need removing?

Moss is not, by itself, proof that a roof is failing. The useful question is whether growth is obstructing drainage, concealing damage or affecting the roof covering—not simply whether the roof looks green.

When moss can stay—and when to investigate

Light moss or lichen can be mainly cosmetic. Growth near tile channels, gutters and outlets deserves more attention because displaced debris can obstruct the route rainwater takes off the roof. An existing leak needs diagnosis rather than an assumption that cleaning will solve it.

A roof inspection distinguishes surface growth from cracked tiles, slipped slates and drainage problems. Cleaning should be proportionate to the roof’s condition; a sound roof with light growth may not need intervention.

How do you remove moss without pressure washing?

We never pressure wash roofs. High-powered jet washing can damage tile and slate surfaces and drive water beneath the overlaps. Our approach uses suitable moss removal, low-pressure soft washing and biocide where appropriate.

The method needs to suit the material and its manufacturer’s advice. Fragile or deteriorated coverings need particular care, and some clay-tile guidance cautions against scraping. Roof condition is checked before choosing a method; one treatment is not right for every roof.

Why moss comes back

Shade, nearby trees and a damp north-facing slope can favour regrowth. Biocide treatment can continue working after application, but no honest assessment can promise a permanently moss-free roof.

The product, application conditions and roof material matter. Safety precautions must follow the product instructions; do not assume a treatment is harmless to plants or pets just because it is described as soft washing.

What to look for safely

From the ground, note overflowing gutters, moss falling onto paths and any visible missing tiles. Send photographs from a safe position with your postcode. Do not climb onto the roof to scrape moss or test whether a tile is loose.

Related questions

Will cleaning fix a leaking roof?

Not necessarily. A leak can come from a failed covering, flashing or another junction. Identify and repair the defect; cleaning is not a replacement for leak investigation.

Should a fragile roof be cleaned first?

No cleaning method should be selected before checking the covering and safe access. Necessary repairs may need to happen before any cleaning.
