Roofing questions
Why are my gutters overflowing?
Overflowing gutters often need clearing, but a blockage is not the only possible cause. The outlet, downpipe, gutter alignment and joints all affect whether rainwater drains properly.

Blockage or a gutter defect?
Leaves, roof moss and other debris can obstruct the gutter or outlet. Water spilling at one point can also reflect a damaged joint, sagging support or an incorrect fall. Cleaning removes debris; it does not automatically correct a broken fitting.
Where water appears is a clue, not a diagnosis. Watching from a safe ground-level position during rain can help you describe whether water spills along the gutter, at a joint or near a downpipe.
Do downpipes need checking as well?
Yes. A clean gutter cannot drain properly through a blocked outlet or downpipe. Our gutter-cleaning service includes checking downpipes and photographing the gutters and roof edge so any further attention can be explained.
Water behind the gutter may involve the roof edge or deteriorated eaves felt rather than the gutter channel. That distinction matters because repeatedly clearing an already clear gutter will not repair the eaves.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
There is no single interval that suits every property. Nearby trees, moss shedding from the roof and the history of blockages are more useful than a blanket schedule. Recheck after heavy leaf fall or when you notice water overflowing.
If the same outlet blocks repeatedly, investigate the source of the debris and the drainage arrangement. A recurring fault deserves an explanation, not just another clearance.
Can gutters be cleaned from the ground?
We use gutter vacuum clearance from the ground where possible. The access method still depends on the property and the obstruction. Where ground-level clearance is unsuitable, safe access must be assessed rather than improvised.
Photographs taken safely from the ground are useful when booking. Do not lean from an upstairs window or climb a ladder to investigate an overflowing gutter.
Related questions
Can overflowing gutters cause damp?
They can direct water down walls and onto roof-edge timbers. Damp can have other causes too, so the drainage defect and the affected area both need assessment.
Do I need new gutters if they overflow?
Not automatically. Clearing a blockage may be enough. Damaged joints, supports or a poorly draining gutter may instead need a targeted repair.
